Some interesting facts about butter and margarine

How old were you when you first heard of margarine? I was about 8 years old at the time when my mother first brought home margarine. It was a white, soft brick, wrapped in a plastic material. It came with a small packet of a reddish powder. You opened this brick, which at the time was room temperature and placed in a medium size bowl. The powder pack was opened and sprinkled over the white brick. With a fork or some other suitable instrument the material was kneaded until all the powder was mixed in, turning the white product into something that looked like butter, at least in color. It tasted terrible. This new product was called oleomargarine, or margarine for short. It was a poor man's substitute for butter, because, butter which at that time, the late 30s was very expensive.

Oleomargarine or margarine was first manufactured to fatten turkeys. Unfortunately, the product began killing off the turkeys, so rather than lose the money invested in the product, someone decided to sell it as a butter substitute, because it was very cheaply manufactured and had somewhat the consistency of butter.

So thus was born a product with practically no food appeal, brought to the market as a butter substitute. Later, the dye packet was replaced with a gelatin bubble which had to be broken by squeezing it, that way you could kneed it still in the package of plastic, until it was the right color.

later, it was sold already colored, but with out much food value.

How do you like it? later they came out with new flavorings. When I worked for Durkees Foods in Berkeley while I was in college, I worked in the laboratory and analyzed the oil that went into the product, mostly 80% cottonseed oil and 20% Soy bean oil. It was hydrogonated to make it firm, and some times if it was not hard enough, palm kernal oil was added. Then came the flavorings and nutrients added to it. I sat on many panels, or rather round tables to judge the taste of the finished product. Can you tell the difference between butter and margarine? I could and still can.

Now for some facts, Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Both have the same amount of calories.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating Butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has only that which is added and by itself has little to no nutritional value.

Butter tastes much better than margarine and can enhance the flavors of other foods. I remember sitting on taste panels, the company tried all kinds of artificial flavors to duplicate the taste of butter, many of the panel members often could not distinguish the difference between the two, I always could.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids,

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol).

Someone once asked me why I don't have membership in The Better Business Bureau. Well here is the deal, to belong to the BBB, it costs $500 per year. Now if I was making a lot of money on this site, that may not be such a bad deal, problem is, I have not made more than about $25 all year, so I could not afford to join the organization, even as a business expense. Perhaps later. You can check on my character by just asking me, or "google" my name, you might find a surprise. I can give you some references if you would like to see what others say about me.
I hope to be making more money now that I have almost finished stocking my store with "more" products. I say "more" because some of these products are not directly related to Health Essentials. There are a lot good products, though, so if you browse the store for these, you should browse by category, and if you find a category you are interested in, just follow it out until you come to something you like. Most items are marked down 10% from the MSRP. If you have something in mind that you are really interested in, and can't find it anywhere, get back to me, I have access to over a million products from many suppliers, so I might be able to find it for you and place it in the store.

Speaking of that, you may be wondering why I do not put more products in the store anyway. The truth is, if I put more than 500, the people who are hosting this site charges me more if I have more than 500 products on it. What is MRSA and why are the Health Authorities So Concerned?
As mentioned earlier, MRSA, or methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, is a mutated form of the well-known pathogen Staphylococcus aureus (also known as staph). It lives on the skin of most people, but in its mutated state it can cause deaths in humans within a matter of days if it works its way into the blood stream througha monor scratch or scrape the skin or an open sore, wound,cut or boil.Staph was once easily treated with penicillin, but the organism is now completely resistant. Even the the more powerful prescription antibiotic drug, methicillin, barely touches this deadly superbug. A University of Wisconsin study reveals that grape juice reduces the risk of blood clots and boosts cardiac health, says a recent article in The New York Times.
